Sankalpa (संकल्प), is a Sanskrit term that translates to ‘an intention formed by the heart and mind—a solemn vow, determination, or will’.
Through Sankalpa, we weave our dreams into reality, aligning our intentions with the deepest truths of our hearts. This ancient practice offers more than just a fleeting goal; it’s a heartfelt resolve that transforms the way we live, guiding us toward our highest purpose. Rooted in the Sanskrit words san (connection with the highest truth) and kalpa (a vow above all others), Sankalpa invites us to listen deeply to our soul’s desires and take purposeful steps toward embodying them. Unlike traditional resolutions that often focus on what we lack, Sankalpa starts from the profound truth that we already possess all we need to fulfill our divine purpose.
Sankalpa offers a more meaningful, purposeful, and heart-felt shift from the conventional approach to New Year’s resolutions.
Two Types of Sankalpa
- Truth Statements: These reflect who you truly are, such as, “I am a child of God.”
- Goal-Oriented Intentions: These describe actions or habits to support your purpose but are stated as though they are already a reality. For example, rather than saying, “I need to commit to my meditation practice,” you would declare, “I have a daily meditation practice.”
The Process of Discovering Your Sankalpa
Finding your Sankalpa is a journey of deep listening and introspection. The Vedanta tradition outlines three stages:
- Sravana: Willingness to hear the message of your heartfelt desire.
- Manana: Welcoming the message, sitting with it, and reflecting deeply.
- Nididhyasana: Taking action based on what the desire requires of you.

To uncover your Sankalpa, ask yourself:
- Is there a habit you want to change? Why?
- How do you want to improve your quality of life? How will it make you feel?
- What character traits do you want to transform? How will this benefit you and others?
- What do you want to achieve in life? What good will it bring?
- When you visualize your perfect future, what do you see? How will you get there, and why does it matter?
You may need to ask yourself these questions multiple times to get to the root of your desires. Once discovered, your Sankalpa should always be stated in the present tense to affirm that you already possess the essence of your goal. For example:
- Instead of “I want to be less busy,” say, “Peacefulness is my true nature.”
- Instead of “I will meditate daily,” declare, “I am peaceful through my daily meditation practice.”
Viewing Sankalpa Through The Christian Perspective
As Christians, our highest truth is God and His will for our lives. Our deepest purpose is not found within ourselves but in surrendering to and following Jesus Christ. When we seek to align our Sankalpa with God’s truth, we discover that our intentions and goals are best fulfilled by trusting in His guidance and living according to His Word. This commitment calls us to seek our higher calling, the very purpose God created us for. When we surrender to God’s will for our lives then He fills our hearts with desires that are going to excite and ignite us beyond anything we can do or dream ourselves! Walking in faith and obedience to Him is the secret to unleashing our God-given Sankalpa.

The ultimate Sankalpa for a Christian is rooted in the Great Commandment—to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love others as ourselves. By focusing our hearts on God’s will, we find clarity and strength to live a life of purpose and peace. A life of joy and divine connection (samadhi). Whether through prayer, scripture meditation, or service to others, our resolve becomes an act of worship, reflecting God’s love and grace in every aspect of our lives.
Practicing Your Sankalpa
There are many ways to integrate your Sankalpa into daily life:
- Begin your yoga practices (asana, pranayama, meditation) with your Sankalpa.
- Repeat your Sankalpa during Yoga Nidra.
- Use it to counter negative thoughts.
- Sacrifice something for 40 days, reciting your Sankalpa whenever the desire arises.
- Chant it during meditation.
- Use it as a mantra during pranayama.
- Set reminders of your Sankalpa on your phone or computer.
- Quietly repeat it before going to sleep.
Overcoming Challenges
Sticking to your Sankalpa can be difficult because the mind is naturally restless and full of doubts. Change takes time, but with consistent practice, your actions will start to align with your intentions. If you falter, don’t judge yourself. Instead, renew your resolve and continue moving forward with positivity.
Sankalpa is more than a fleeting intention; it is a profound declaration of your deepest truth and purpose. By embracing this practice, you step into a journey of alignment—connecting your heart, mind, and spirit to the divine energy within and around you. Whether you are seeking personal growth, spiritual transformation, or simply a more intentional way of living, Sankalpa provides the foundation to weave your dreams into reality. Through faith, perseverance, and a heart open to God’s guidance, your resolve becomes a sacred act, empowering you to live each moment with clarity, grace, and purpose.
